When the movie Goldfinger debuted in Canada I was in the audience. The sight of that glorious Aston Martin DB5 being driven through a series of Swiss mountain hairpin turns by Sean Connery as 007 had quite an influence, for it made me want to live there and drive those roads. Eventually I did both, though the car was a humble Fiat 124 and my new home became London, not Geneva. Gert Frbe played the evil Goldfinger, so imagine my surprise when he appeared next to me in a London shop with an armful of groceries, looking like a nice, friendly fellow. That lovely Aston Martin is to be auctioned in Arizona in January and if I win the lottery I may just buy it. ...

The word 'classic' usually denotes something that possesses lasting significance and worth. It is generally appended to anything whose value has withstood the test of time. A classic is held with high esteem. It belongs to the highest rank. Classic car is a term frequently used to describe an older automobile. Popular usage says that any car over 25 years old can be considered as a "classic car". The Classic Car Club of America, considered as a leading authority on classic cars, defines a classic car as: a "fine" or "distinctive" automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948.

With the passing of time and the inevitable turnover of people involved in the Triumph scene I feel it is worthwhile documenting the development of the present organisation. To this end I have prepared this brief resume of our history. The history of the club starts in 1954 when the Triumph Sports Owners Association (TSOA) was inaugurated by the then Standard Triumph International Company for the growing number of American owners of the successful TR sports car range. The Standard Triumph Automobile Association (STAA) was also formed at this time for owners of other Standard and Triumph cars and this provided the basis for the future structure. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's various local branches were set up throughout the U.K. these being run on an autonomous basis, having their own membership fee and volunteer committee, although acting under the umbrella of the factory "Head Office" STAA and receiving support from the same. Inter-branch communication was carried out centrally by the factory publicity department and took the form of a section in the company magazine "The Standard-Triumph Review". What is now Club Triumph was formed as the STAA North London Branch in 1961.
